The Old Station Tintern
This historic Station once transported thousands of visitors from afar to visit Tintern and the Abbey
The Old Station in Tintern is an ideal place for you to enjoy the countryside in a safe and fun environment.
Situated some distance from the northern end of the village, Tintern Station was the largest railway complex on the Wye Valley branch line.
The station layout consisted of a main station platform with stone building, an island platform, signal box, goods shed, loading bays, cattle pens and several sidings.
The railway hoped that the nearby Tintern Abbey would become a lucrative tourist attraction and ran many 'Abbey Specials' from the late 1870s to the early 1950s.
Passenger services to the station ceased in 1959 with goods traffic surviving until final closure of the line in 1964.
Happily, much of the station complex has since been restored into a popular picnic site, with the station building hosting a small cafe.
The site has a picnic area, on site barbecues and a café selling homemade cakes and snacks.
There are two old railway carriages one with an exhibition telling the history of the old railway which shows a film about the railway and places of interest nearby, the other carriage is an information point and shop selling many childrens items.
There is a miniature railway on site that visitors can ride on (please ring for details of when this is operating), as well as a full programme of family activities including archery, bug hunting, bat detecting etc. A childrens environmental club meets at the station every month. A full programme of activities runs throughout the school holidays at Easter, summer and half terms.
Our Circle of Legends wooden statues are also on site each with there own story.
Today as well as celbrating it's past heritage it is also a learn, place for the young to play and enjoy
